Flames Beat Up Avs, 2-3

Looking back, should have known that this one was going to be a tough one to win.  They faced yet another hungry, bubble playoff team who had to win the game, but this time the Avs PP and goaltending wasn’t enough to overcome their poor 5 on 5 play.
  • The play of the game came early on the PP when Stewart had his forced pass back to Quincey get tipped and Quincey tried / failed to bat the puck out of the air, instead of playing it safe and skating back out of the zone to defend Bourque.  Instead, Bourque beats Andy on a shorthanded breakaway.  It's one thing to try a desperation keep in if you are down 3-1 late in the 3rd, but not 5 min into a 0-0 game.  Quincey has to be smarter.
  • From that point on the Avs were on their collective heels and Calgary built a 3-0 lead and had the game exactly at the pace they wanted to play for better than half the game.
  • Lots of credit to the Flames, who played a great defensive game, especially while building their 3-0 lead.  They didn’t take penalties, they made Colorado work for every offensive chance, they didn’t allow the Avs to use their speed and they spent a whole lot of time the Avs zone.
  • Colorado just wasn’t sharp enough.  Lots of missed passes.  Struggled to find energy.
  • It's incredibly weird to see longtime Oiler Steve Staios in a Flames jersey.
  • Tough to see Ryan Wilson get knocked out of the game due to a fight he was challenged to, but when you hit like Ryan does, dropping the gloves comes with that territory.
